CONWY Borough manager Matthew Jones has been reflecting on an eventful year from a personal perspective and for domestic football across the country.
The Tangerines’ boss began 2020 as manager of Llandudno, before making the move to Y Morfa last summer. This has come with just one competitive game as COVID-19 continues to cause havoc to the normal programme, with the start of the new JD Cymru North campaign put on hold “until further notice” due to the Tier 4 restrictions implemented by the Welsh Government.
Jones, said: “2020 was obviously a year like no other and a year when football was both put into perspective but also the positive impact it has on people’s lives has been magnified.
“Coincidently my 2020 started with a game at Conwy, drawing 3-3 in a great game while I was managing Llandudno.
“It was obviously disappointing not to continue at Llandudno but ultimately, on a personal level, things have turned out really well, I feel extremely excited to be at Conwy and feel I have found a very good fit at what is a great club. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those behind the scenes for giving me this opportunity.”
Jones heaped praise on the work being done behind the scenes at Borough during a difficult time, with his players also adjusting well to what has been an ever-changing situation for everyone involved.
“The efforts made by Chris, Lee and Darren, as well as the tireless work from the other volunteers has been admirable, the work done has ensured that the management team and players can concentrate purely on the football side, which has also had to be planned very differently,” he added.
“The players themselves have also been extremely patient and co-operative, understanding that these are unprecedented times, and working with us.
“With things like the food bank collection, selling raffle tickets, training consistently and contributing to the community. I am proud to be manager of this group of players and the management team.
The manager is hopeful that the second-tier can get in the 15 games as scheduled, even though it was “hard to predict”, but it is clear Jones is looking forward to developing the club both on and off the pitch in the coming months.
He said: “In a nutshell, I want to be at this club for a very long time, and I want to be part of the on and off the pitch developments here at Conwy Borough FC.”
