CONWY Borough manager Matthew Jones fears for the future of the domestic game due to current restrictions surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.
The Tangerines’ boss called the Football Association of Wales’ decision to begin phase three as “good news”, even though it does seem like some time away before the JD Cymru North campaign will be permitted to start amid ongoing discussions between the FAW and Welsh Government.
Jones also outlined his concerns regarding player and volunteer involvement if the campaign does not get the green light at the earliest possible opportunity, which could have a lasting impact on the grassroots that that should not be overlooked.
He said: “With the FAWs announcement this week that we will be moving into phase three, it is good news to finally get a date that we can start playing friendlies, and it gives us something to work towards.
“After the first minister’s announcement that there is minimal to no risk of transmitting outside, this step seems logical. Obviously, people’s health is what’s paramount, and the government and FAW must be very mindful of the rise in cases.
“It obviously a frustrating time for us involved in football below tier 1, there may be long-lasting damage to the game and people’s motivation to be involved, with more important things to think about, but hopefully with these positive steps, people’s interest will be reignited. There are a couple of things within the phase three protocol that need clarification but I’m sure that will all come with time.”
Jones was full of praise for the application his squad has shown during a difficult and uncertain time, which will hopefully mean they can hit the ground running when it is time to concentrate on playing matters once again.
Borough are coming off a strong season that eventually resulted in a top-six finish and there are hopes for another bold bid next time around after a number of eye-catching signings this summer.
“Our lads’ attitude and application throughout this whole thing have been nothing short of superb,” added Jones.
“We have had excellent numbers in training and the appetite of the players to continue to train at such a high level even without any idea of when we might start has been hugely refreshing, and given us as a coaching team exactly what we want. The motives on and morale in the group is extremely high and we are itching to get back.
“I’d also like to say that those behind the scenes at the club, people like Chris, Jonesi, Darren, and many more have been hugely supportive and their enthusiasm has also ensured a positive atmosphere throughout.”
