CONWY Borough manager Chris Morrell is hopeful the club can “see through” the current coronavirus fixture suspension.
The Tangerines’ are just one of a host of clubs across the region that have been hit hard financially during the domestic fixture suspension, with no money coming in through sponsorship or gate receipts on match day.
Morrell stated the JD Cymru North side are in a good position after “not stretching their budget” during the 2019/20 season so far, but he is in constant contact with chairman Chris Wilton regarding the ever-developing situation.
He said: “I think the strain on every club is going to be difficult, but we must always keep in mind there are more important battles going on at the moment with peoples’ health.
“We’re a club that doesn’t carry a big budget and haven’t stretched our budget either so hopefully in the long term we can see this through.
“The chairman has been in constant contact with me and though it’s obviously difficult with no money coming through the gates or match sponsorship, being in a holding pattern hopefully won’t be too detrimental to us.
“One thing I would say is we, as I’m sure most amateur clubs do, heavily rely on match day receipts, bar and food sales etc so playing behind ’closed doors’ would likely be where any big issue would arise.”
Morrell added that he “can see the argument” for the current season to be cancelled, but was keen to stress that the current plight of NHS staff and other keyworkers makes football “irrelevant” at the present time.
“How cancelling the league is done is probably the bigger question as I don’t think it’s a case of one size fits all,” added Morrell.
“The issue in our own league is more perhaps relegation so maybe points per game is a solution rather than being null and void, but this may also depend on what happens to tier three.
“I’m certain there are far more clever people than I looking at the options but I must say ultimately when NHS staff are literally giving up their lives to help battle this virus, who wins at football feels somewhat irrelevant at the moment.
“And that’s coming from someone who hates losing anything and supports Liverpool.”
