A PROMISING triathlete at a Colwyn Bay school has been rewarded for an outstanding season with a coveted national squad selection.
Cameron Shaw, a Year 11 pupil at Rydal Penrhos, has earned a call-up to the Welsh Triathlon squad for the second consecutive year.
This represents a significant accomplishment from the teenager, who has secured a wealth of outstanding successes in a competitive environment over the campaign.
A standout showing at the Urdd National Swimming Gala saw Cameron defy the odds in the 100-metre freestyle race to claim a silver medal, and he recently secured qualification to the Welsh Schools’ Cross-Country Championships following a superb performance at the Eryri qualifier.
Cameron ended the season on a high with two notable victories at the Aberystwyth Junior Triathlon last month, and he followed this up by crossing the line first at the Chester Junior Triathlon.
He joined up with other senior squad members last week at a training camp to develop their skills further in addition to familiarising themselves with teammates.
The multi-talented individual is also a very strong academic and is currently preparing for his upcoming GCSE examinations as well as attaining his Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award.
Sally Ann Harding, senior school head at Rydal Penrhos, said: “This is a well-deserved national squad selection and is a testament to his ongoing commitment and exceptional recent progression.
“He balances his training and studies incredibly well and has a maturity beyond his years in a competitive environment.
“Cameron is going to benefit enormously from his experience with the Welsh squad and we wish him the best of luck.”
