CONWY Borough returned from a long layoff with an eye-catching 3-1 triumph at Ruthin Town.
The Tangerines’ showed no signs of rust with a polished performance to bolster their chances of a high finish in JD Cymru North, leaving them in high spirits ahead of their home encounter with Llanfair United on Saturday.
First team manager Chris Morrell, said: “As predicted our lack of games recently certainly had an affect on the game, but the lads dug in and once again showed how much they battle for each other in a really important win.
“Ruthin are a really good team and worked us right to the end but our first half showing in particular was worthy of the points and so it panned out.
“It was great to see Craig Whelan on the score sheet, Iolo Hughes was back to his best and the young trio of Aidan (Clark), Osian (Hughes) and John (Littlemore) all made their debuts.
“The whole squad deserve credit for taking the points. We have another week of training now before a big home game next Saturday.”
Things got off to the best possible start from the visitors’ perspective, with Craig Whelan’s looping strike evading the fingertips of Ryan Goldston to break the deadlock on four minutes.
The away side were given a significant chance to double their lead on 29 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, and top scorer Corrig McGonigle powered the spot kick into the top corner After the break saw Town awarded a penalty of their own on 75 minutes that was initially saved by Ben Heald, but Josh Jones reacted well to his miss with the rebound and reduce the arrears.
A dramatic portion of the game saw Borough given their second spot kick of the afternoon which resulted in a red card for Osian Davies, who was adjudged to have handled on the line.
McGonigle made no mistake with the finish for his brace to round off the scoring and seal another impressive three points for the visitors.
