CONWY Borough FC scooped a special award for their efforts to promote an international awareness campaign.
The JD Cymru North side were crowned winners of the Welsh Category at the Football vs Homophobia Awards on Friday evening in recognition of their outstanding commitment towards the cause.
The Tangerines’ designed a special rainbow coloured strip for their Huws Gray Alliance encounter with Prestatyn Town last season and auctioned off the one-off kit to raise money for the initiative.
This resulted in significant media interest from across the country and beyond, with the charity auction also raising a considerable amount for the worthy cause.
A Conwy Borough spokesman, said: “We are humbled to have won this award but more importantly are thrilled to have had the opportunity to support the fantastic work carried out by Football vs Homophobia.”
Football vs Homophobia is an international initiative to encourage participation in football and to oppose homophobia, biphobia and transphobia at all levels of the sport – from grassroots to top-flight professional clubs.
It was originally conceived and launched by the Justin Campaign in 2010, which was founded in 2008 to mark the tenth anniversary of professional footballer Justin Fashanu’s suicide following his struggles with being gay in a sporting environment.
Homophobia was still hugely prevalent in both grassroots and professional football during this period, but the campaign has gone from strength-to-strength in recent years.
