A SCINTILLATING first half was the catalyst behind RGC’s 64-21 victory at Principality Premiership title rivals Cardiff.
The Gogs made it two wins in four days to make it an Easter Bank Holiday weekend to remember, and Mark Jones’ men will look to bring their impressive form into Saturday’s trip to Pontypridd in what is set to be another stern test.
The away side wasted no time in stamping their authority on proceedings and went ahead on five minutes when Tiaan Loots touched down. Jacob Botica added the extras.
This was swiftly followed by another score which came courtesy of scrum-half Alex Schwartz on eight minutes, and the rampant visitors got further joy with another blistering turn of pace from Iolo Evans to cross the white wash.
Botica nailed one of the conversion attempts, and he was on hand to despatch the extras once again on 24 minutes when Evan Yardley finished off a spellbinding passing move to extend their advantage.
The home side regrouped and got their name on the scoresheet on 30 minutes when Rhodri Cole went over which Gareth Thompson converted, but this was met with another response from RGC thanks to the in-form Dion Jones. Botica fired over the extras.
Adam Jones reduced the arrears shortly before the break with a well-worked try which Thompson converted, but normal service was resumed after the interval when Yardley crashed over for his second of the afternoon after superb work from Loots and Tom Hughes. The assured boot of Botica gained another two points with the extra-point attempt.
The hosts kept plugging away and got another score on 56 minutes when Luke Crocker touched down after a rare period of pressure, and Thompson drilled over the conversion for their final points of the contest.
RGC made a number of changes and they had an instant impact, with Efan Jones going over after an outstanding 40-yard run from Danny Cross on 71 minutes, and winger Rhys Williams got a deserved try on 77.
The impressive Jones put the exclamation point on proceedings with his brace with virtually the final action of the tie, with Cross successful with all three conversions to complete the rout.
