A TRIO of North Wales Road Runners Club (NWRRC) members competed in two different but challenging races at the Tywyn Rotary Club’s “Race the Train” events last weekend.

Kay Hatton and Cheryl Frost ran in the Quarry Challenge 10k and both members were pleased with their performances on a warm and windy day.

Kay ran well and finished 75th out of 256 entrants, and she was the 13th female athlete and claimed 4th place in her VW55 age cat in 54.56.

Cheryl who was recovering from a period of ill health, finished very close behind her club colleague in 79th place overall and 5th in the same cat, running home in 55.14.

Richard Eccles opted for the longer Rotary Challenge endurance race across 14 miles which covered much of the same course as the other three races.

He was one of 436 entrants and finished in 101st place in one hour, 58 minutes and 31 seconds to claim 5th place in his MV55 age cat.

Richard said: “A bad race for me, too hot, and I struggled into a headwind on the way home, so a humbling run but enjoyable once completed.”

The event was expected to have raised thousands of pounds for the Rotary Club’s nominated charities, Blind Veterans, and the Welsh Air Ambulance.

Bright and breezy with close finish at Conwy parkrun

Some 267 runners tackled the Conwy parkrun last Saturday (August 20) amid bright but breezy conditions, which was in stark contrast to the blistering heat of the previous week.

Teenager Morgan Kendall was the first runner home to celebrate his third parkrun victory at Conwy, and his 90th parkrun overall.

But this time, he also recorded a great new PB of just 17 minutes and 38 seconds to win his SM18-19 age category.

Morgan was pushed all the way by Martin Green (NWRRC) and Nic Brook (Eryri Harriers), who both gave him a hard chase and finished in second and third respectively.

Martin was only 15 seconds behind the leader, but won his MV45 cat in 17.53, with Nic third overall in 18.05, and he finished second in his age cat behind Martin.

North Wales Road Runners only had eight club entrants this week due to other race commitments but still claimed five podium places including three age cat wins.

Martin Green led the team home with Harry Driscoll next in 14th place and second in his SM20 in 20.12.

And Carla Green made it a family age cat double as the first female runner home, and first in her VW50 cat, finishing in 36th place overall in 22.52.

Carla enjoyed a fine run, and she was just seven seconds ahead of rival Gemma Moore (Eryri Harriers) in 22.59.

Veteran Rob Fryer was third in his MV65 cat and finished in 89th place in 25.43, with Sue Smith 160th and third in her VW55 cat in 30.04, whilst Gwennan Charlton finished in 165th place in 30.18.

Ben finished in 172nd place and won his JM10 age cat in 31.00, whilst Henry ran well and claimed the second spot in the same junior age cat, finishing 178th in 31.29, with Dave just one second and one place behind him as a chaperone, and Mike Smith ran home in 199th place in 33.05.
