LEX XI consolidated their position at the head of the Spillane & Co Colwyn Bay & District Midweek Cricket League with a hard-fought victory againt Grape to Grass.

Tight bowling on a slow wicket meant that Lex openers Sam Rimmington (51) and Dan Jones (14) had to work for their runs, with the rate below six an over for the first 10 overs.

Finn Eames-Hughes then took two wickets in an over to leave the innings teetering on 98-4.

But Anthony Edwards (43) produced his second good knock of the season to up the rate, with the innings closing on 132-6.

Grapes openers Dan Russell (21) and Jim Jones (32) looked to be pacing the reply well, but when both fell to good catches in the deep, the Lex bowlers got on top and restricted the scoring.

Jack Evans made a determined 27, but could not find the boundaries needed, with Grapes eventually reaching 96/6 in their 20 overs.

In the other game played, Abergele shrugged off last week’s defeat to overcome Llanrwst in a tense battle.

Llanrwst posted a challenging 128/6, with Alwyn Williams providing the backbone of the innings before retiring on 50.

Gaj Hughes was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 12/2. Mionak Pyne (53) laid the platform for the Abergele reply as they kept up with the run rate.

With two overs left, only eight runs were required, and good running between the wickets saw Abergele scramble home with just five balls to spare.
