A CAMPAIGN to raise a bronze statue of Terry Jones on the promenade in his home town of Colwyn Bay has now surpassed £100,000.

The plan, supported by Conwy County Borough Council, is for Llandudno sculptor Nick Elphick to create a lasting tribute to Terry, to be placed on the prom at Colwyn Bay.

Currently, the total money raised stands at £105,395.

Sally Jones, his daughter, who is leading the A Python On The Prom fundraiser with her brother, Bill, and Conwy Arts Trust, said: “It’s amazing; we have had such an overwhelming response from everyone, and to have gone past £100,000 makes it all seem very real!

Colwyn Bay Monty Python statue appeal closes in on £120,000 target

“When we add in our sales of campaign T-shirts, we are now only £15,000 away from our £120,000 target!

“Our T-shirts have been selling incredibly well and we’ve been sending them all over the world, from Iceland to New Zealand.

“We want to build a wall of selfies of supporters in their T-shirts, and would love anyone who has one to post it on social media and tag the campaign #apythonontheprom.

“We want everyone to see how much love there really is for Terry.”

Welsh musician Cerys Matthews, close friend of Terry and fellow film director Sara Sugarman, actor Stephen Mangan, writer and comedian David Baddiel, and actress Joely Richardson have also put their support behind the campaign.

David Baddiel said: “Terry was a great performer and director and writer. I totally support the idea of him having a statue in Colwyn Bay, both as a comedian and as a half-Welshman!”

Sally added: “We are so close to our total that we are really hopeful that we will be able to unveil the statue next summer in Colwyn Bay, with a big party on the beach!”
