A MAN from Colwyn Bay has been disqualified from driving for four years, and given a 16-week jail term suspended for 18 months, after being convicted of drug-driving.

Nicholas Highton, 32, of Dundonald Road, was first stopped on June 30 shortly before midday on Grove Park, and tested positive for both cannabis and cocaine at the roadside.

He was arrested and taken to custody, where a further test was carried out, before being released under investigation.

Driver stopped in Llandudno after vehicle had ‘heavily tinted windows’

During a road safety operation on October 4, he was stopped due to the manner of his driving and refused to take the roadside drugs test.

He was arrested and taken to custody in St Asaph where, again, he failed to provide an evidential sample.

On Wednesday (November 20), he appeared before Llandudno Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to drug-driving and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

As well as the disqualification and sentence, he must also pay £85 in court costs and a £154 surcharge.

A North Wales Police spokesperson said: “Choosing to drive when impaired by drugs is dangerous and unacceptable.

“We work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and anyone who is considering driving whilst under the influence should know that we will be out and about waiting for them.

“We'll continue to crack down on those who take this unnecessary risk and bring them before the courts.”
