A MAN who witnessed the Llandudno crash which killed his friend and flushed his dashcam’s SD card down a toilet would have been sacked by North Wales Police had he not already resigned.

Jack Jones, a 21-year-old former special constable, of Min Y Don Avenue, Old Colwyn, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for a year, on November 4, after admitting perverting the course of justice.

He and Finnley Jones had both been driving on Conway Road on October 24, 2022 after finishing work at JD Sports, when Finnley Jones struck a wall.

Finnley Jones died in hospital aged 20 a week later.

At the time of the crash, Jack Jones was driving behind Finnley Jones, before he brought his own vehicle to a stop seconds later.

When police spoke to Jack Jones, he did not mention that he knew Finnley Jones, and claimed he never had a SD card for his dashcam.

Following the conclusion of court proceedings last week, Jack Jones’ misconduct hearing with the force, held privately in April 2023, has now been published.

North Wales Police’s chief constable, Amanda Blakeman, said: “The former officer had the opportunity to inform the roads policing officers at the time of the incident, but he chose not to.

“Furthermore, having had time to think about his actions, he deliberately destroyed the SD card at a later stage.

“Former officer Jones could have reflected and provided the evidence to the police officers to assist them in piecing together Finnley’s last movements, but his focus was selfishly on his own position.

“Former officer Jones, whilst removing the SD card and then later going onto destroy the evidence, has caused significant harm to the reputation of North Wales Police.

“He has bought discreditable conduct to North Wales Police and thought only of himself when Finnley was in a critical condition.”

On October 31, 2022, the day Finnley Jones died in hospital, Jack Jones was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

When a search was conducted at his home, the box which his dashcam was delivered in was found.

He then admitted “panicking” and removing the dashcam from its holder and putting the SD card in his pocket, before later flushing the card down a toilet without viewing its content.

Chief constable Blakeman found that the actions of Jack Jones, who had served the force for less than a year, amounted to gross misconduct, and ruled that he would have been dismissed without notice if not for his earlier resignation.

Jack Jones did not attend or have legal representation at the hearing, nor was he said to have responded to any formal documentation concerning it.
