A WOMAN who caused a man “life-changing” injuries after she hit him with her car while drink-driving in Llandudno has been struck off the nursing register.
Charlotte Brown, 35, of Cysgod y Castell, Llandudno Junction, was jailed in October 2023 after hospitalising Mark Davies on January 28, 2023.
Mr Davies, a pedestrian, suffered such serious injuries that he spent the following three-and-a-half months after the incident in hospital, has lost the use of his right arm, and cannot speak properly.
one-quarter of her 16-month sentence in prison, was handed a striking-off order.
At a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) fitness to practise hearing today (November 8), Brown, who servedShe was ward manager at a mental health unit at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan, and told the hearing that she wanted to return to nursing, and accepts full responsibility for her actions on the evening of January 28, 2023.
Laurence Harris, representing Brown, had sought to persuade the hearing panel to refrain from striking her off the register, given her “profound and genuine remorse” and her “positive moral character prior to this incident”.
Mr Davies suffered as a result.
But Darren Shenton, chairing the panel, told Brown that a striking-off order was the “only appropriate action” because of the severity of the incident, and the “catastrophic” and “life-changing” injuriesHe added to Brown: “We recognise the difficulty of these circumstances, but the panel appreciate your engagement, forthrightness and reflection, in what must have been a really difficult occasion.”
Benedict Scantlebury, representing the NMC, had argued that even a suspension order for Brown would not be “proportionate” given the seriousness of her offence.
Brown, a mother-of-one, pleaded guilty to criminal charges of causing injury by careless/inconsiderate driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving while above the legal alcohol limit.
After hitting Mr Davies, an incident which left Brown’s vehicle with a smashed windscreen, she continued driving before hitting a pedestrian crossing island by Llandudno Magistrates’ Court.
This caused her vehicle to overturn, and after being assisted out of the car by members of the public, Brown then fled the scene.
Judge Nicola Jones, who sentenced Brown in October 2023, told her: “I cannot imagine, and I have never seen, more serious injuries, in a case of this nature.”
