Rydal Penrhos School has secured a funding boost to create a community hockey club.

The school received the grant from Hoci Cymru and Sport Wales to help "engage with young people" and "offer elite sporting facilities."

The money will be used to improve the astroturf and hockey facilities, which will be open to nearby sports teams and the wider community.

The school hopes this will encourage more people to take part in sports, especially younger residents.

Tom Hutchinson, principal of Rydal Penrhos, said: "We are thrilled to receive this generous funding from Hoci Cymru and Sport Wales.

"This investment will not only improve our facilities but also create a lasting legacy for the community.

"We are dedicated to ensuring that our resources are accessible to everyone, and this funding will play a crucial role in achieving that goal."

The school plans to work with Hoci Cymru and nearby sports teams to host community outreach programmes, including coaching clinics, open hockey days, and workshops.

These events are aimed at encouraging people of all ages and skill levels to get involved in hockey.

Hoci Cymru's director of development and participation, Joe Gage, said: "I am thrilled to see the partnership between Rydal Penrhos, Hoci Cymru, and Sport Wales come to life through this significant funding grant.

"This collaboration, supported by the Welsh Government and the joint efforts of Hoci Cymru, WRU, and FAW, is a significant step toward our vision to ‘ignite a passion for hockey’ across Wales, creating inclusive spaces that allow ‘all to engage, compete and perform’.

"By enhancing facilities and launching community-driven initiatives, Rydal Penrhos is not only investing in elite resources but also laying the foundation for a lasting legacy in North Wales, directly benefitting local clubs like Eirias Hockey Club and providing them with improved resources to engage, develop, and inspire players of all ages and abilities."

Hoci Cymru has encouraged everyone in the community to support Rydal Penrhos School in the initiative and to participate in the upcoming events, which aim to make hockey more accessible to all.

The school is keen to cultivate a thriving hockey culture that promotes physical health, teamwork, and community spirit.

The date for when the events will start has not yet been announced.
