LAST WEEK it emerged that Greggs was being lined up to replace a closed tapas bar and restaurant in Conwy, and readers gave their views on the potential move.

The high street bakery is rumoured to be in talks to open a new store on Castle Street, at the site which previously belonged to The Midland.

The tapas bar and restaurant closed in February, and while Greggs did not confirm whether it would take over the premises, it did say the company was "always looking into new locations".

Pioneer readers had their say, with several residents commenting that the chain was “not needed” in the town, with the town having “plenty of lovely local bakeries”.

Adam Melia said he felt the business would “make a fortune”, but this would be at the expense of independent businesses.

Helen Siertsema called the news “dreadful”, while Linda Wild said “it’s a disgrace”.

Others warned of the impact on other bakeries in the town, which is historically not made up of many chain stores.

Deborah Tucker said she “personally doesn't like anything from Greggs”, and Nia Roberts said “chains don’t do well in Conwy”.

Alison Onyelekere called for people to support Conwy’s independent shops and Gwynne Reddick said other businesses like Popty Bakery already provided quality baked goods.

Andrew Sweeney opined that Greggs would result in more people discarding litter, and Sue Ellwood said that although the chain “may satisfy tourists”, residents would always support local bakeries and cafes.

However, Steve Selyor said Greggs would be a “welcome addition” which would increase trade in Conwy, saying the bakery offered “great food at a great price” and also calling for a Wetherspoon pub to open.

Carl Dafydd Thompson said he “doesn’t see an issue with it”, with Jenny Stokes adding that Greggs would “do much better than that place before it”.
