A MAN from Kinmel Bay was told he “could have killed” a woman who was thrown from his car bonnet while he was drink-driving in Rhyl.

Glen Wilson’s actions, early on September 26, left Lisa Dutton “aching all over”, after he had been drinking for several hours prior.

Wilson, 30, of Llys Y Castell, was jailed for a year at Mold Crown Court today (October 22), having previously admitted dangerous driving and drink-driving.

A warrant was issued to him after he missed his sentencing hearing, which was scheduled for yesterday.

Prosecutor Michael Whitty told the court that, on the evening of September 25, Wilson and Ms Dutton consumed alcohol at another person’s house until about 11pm.

He then gave Ms Dutton a lift home, but upon their arrival back at her house, she invited him to come in.

Wilson was “upset and angry” about an argument he had been involved in earlier that evening, so Ms Dutton felt “anxious” to calm down.

The two drank together at Ms Dutton’s home until about 1.25am on September 26, when Wilson went to his car.

He was drunk, so Ms Dutton, concerned he was going to drive, climbed on to the bonnet of his car.

CCTV footage, which was played in court today, captured Wilson then reversing the car at some speed towards Cefndy Road, before crashing into a traffic calming island and a lamppost.

The impact of this crash caused Ms Dutton to be thrown from the car and land in the carriageway.

Wilson then shouted at Ms Dutton before driving away – following his arrest, he gave a roadside breath test which showed he was almost twice the legal alcohol limit.

Defending Wilson, who had 15 previous convictions for 20 offences, Duncan Bould said his client apologises for his absence yesterday.

After realising he had missed his sentencing, Mr Bould said Wilson “handed himself in” at Rhyl Police Station, and remained in custody there until now.

Mr Bould said Wilson “simply snapped” on the night in question, but is now “profoundly sorry” and “contrite”, having realised the “stupidity” of his actions.

Sentencing, Judge Niclas Parry also banned Wilson from driving for 18 months.

Judge Parry told him: “That lady was trying to help you. She was trying to save you from yourself. You could have killed her.

“I’ve seen people in this court put their hands to their faces upon watching this CCTV, as your victim flew off that car.”
