A Coleg Llandrillo hairdressing student has won a prestigious Calligraphy Cut scholarship.

Heather Wynne, who studies Level 3 Hairdressing at the college's Rhos-on-Sea campus, has become one of ten winners of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing's scholarship.

Ms Wynne is also preparing for the WorldSkills UK final, after winning the regional heat in Manchester earlier this year.

Ms Wynne recently scooped a silver in the Bridal Stylist of the Year category at the Beauty Full Box Awards, and was a top 10 finisher in the UK Hair and Beauty Awards.

She is now hoping to travel to London next month to compete against the other nine successful scholarship applicants for the opportunity to train exclusively with the founder of the Calligraphy Cut brand, Frank Brormann.

This is, however, dependent on her securing funding for the trip.

Ms Wynne, who taught herself how to style hair through online videos, is keen to compete against top salons in London on November 11.

She said: "The Calligraphy Cut scholarship is an amazing opportunity.

"The other people who have got through are from fully established salons, some of the best in the industry, so I’m really happy to have got this far."

The winner of the London audition will be invited to Germany to train with Mr Brormann, and will also be considered for a role in the Calligraphy Cut International Artistic Team.

Calligraphy Cut uses a pen-like tool to enhance volume and minimise split ends.

As part of her scholarship, Ms Wynne has already received Calligraphy Cut equipment worth around £1,500, as well as a year’s access to a digital training academy.

Ms Wynne said: "To win would be amazing, but I’m really happy with what I’ve received as part of the scholarship."

The mum-of-two, who styled hair as a means of making ends meet during her university years, began her formal training last September when she enrolled on the Level 2 Hairdressing course.

Ms Wynne said: "I didn’t know anything about cutting before I came to college, so the skills I’ve needed for this are skills I’ve only learned during my time here."

Ms Wynne, who has also reached this year’s Concept Hair Learner of the Year UK final, will be competing in the WorldSkills UK final in Manchester from November 19 to 22.

There, she stands a chance to represent Team UK in the Shanghai 2026 WorldSkills international competition.

Ms Wynne is seeking financial support for her travel costs to London for the Calligraphy Cut Scholarship.
