A NUMBER of public toilet facilities in Conwy are closing for good from today (October 14).
The toilets closing today include several which are already unavailable because of repeated vandalism, such as Maelgwyn Road in Llandudno Junction and Ivy Street in Colwyn Bay.
Conwy County Borough Council confirmed in July its plans to close the facilities in September to cut costs, but this was delayed after councillors voted in favour of recommending cabinet provides further statistics in advance of further consultation with councillors.
There are 20 public toilet facilities that will remain open across the county this winter, and a further four will be open from Easter to September.
Cllr Goronwy Edwards, the council’s cabinet member for infrastructure, transport and facilities, said: “Closing toilets is a difficult decision for us to make.
“But every council service has had to find significant financial savings for 2024-25.
“We don’t have the budget to subsidise public toilets, so we have to recoup all running costs from paid-for facilities and sponsorship.
“I am grateful for the support we’ve received from town and community councils, which means we are able to keep more toilets open this winter than we previously announced.”
Since July, the public have been able to use toilet facilities in council buildings such as offices, leisure centres and libraries, even if they are not using other services in the building.
Further toilets are available through the council’s community toilet scheme, where approved businesses allow the public to use their facilities without making a purchase.
There are also five public toilets that are run by town and community councils, in Penmachno, Dolwyddelan, Llanfairfechan, Llansannan and Llangernyw which are not affected by these changes.
Abergele Town Council, Bay of Colwyn Town Council, Conwy Town Council, Llandudno Town Council, Llanfair TH Community Council and Trefriw Community Council are providing sponsorship towards keeping toilets open in their areas for this financial year until the end of March 2025.
