A CAR park in Kinmel Bay will close to the public so that improvements can be made to the area’s coastal defences.

The beach car park at St Asaph Avenue will be closed for parking from Monday (October 7), when contractors will start the work, but there will still be pedestrian access to the promenade.

Conwy County Borough Council apologised for the inconvenience.

Flooding in Kinmel Bay in April saw some residents have to evacuate their homes.

Kinmel Bay’s planned coastal defence works should reduce flooding risks to more than 2,000 homes, and is expected to be completed in late 2025 or 2026.

The plans include raising the rock armour and sea wall at Towyn Revetment, in front of the Golden Sands Holiday Park; raising the sea wall along the frontage at Kinmel Bay West; and raising the rock armour and sea wall at Kinmel Bay East.

A council statement said: “The length of coastline at Kinmel Bay is threatened by flooding due to climate change, causing the sea level to rise and more frequent large storms.

“In some, places existing coastal defences need to be strengthened and increased in height.

“The coastal defences along this stretch of coastline are in varying conditions. They were not designed for the projected sea level rise and increasing storminess we can expect in the future.

“The beach will be closed to the public for this work to be done safely. Once we have completed sections of work, access to the beach will be re-opened in phases.

“The compound area for the work will be using the existing car park on the promenade front. We are currently making arrangements for additional parking to be available in this period.”

Normal working hours for the coastal defence improvements will be from 7am-6pm, Monday to Friday.

Some activities on the project will need to work around the tide, so there will be some early shifts (5am-6pm) and late shifts (continuing until 10pm).
