WORK will begin this week on coastal defence improvements at Llandudno’s North Shore, near the paddling pool.
Contractors for Conwy County Borough will complete the following works, scheduled to be finished by next Easter:
- Repair and replace existing floodgates
- Construct a new wall behind the paddling pool running along the rear of the footpath, replacing existing concrete bollards and chains
- Build a new ramped access structure west of the paddling pool to close a gap in the defences
- Install a new floodgate across the entrance to the RNLI lifeboat station
- Build a new seawall east of the lifeboat station along the back the footpath
- The sea-side footpath and parking will be closed from near the RNLI to Ffynnon Sadwrn Lane
Earlier this year, a debate took place in the Senedd took place regarding the restoration of sand to North Shore beach.
In August 2022, Welsh Government rejected Conwy County Borough Council’s proposal for funding to see sand returned to North Shore.
Conwy County Borough Council’s cabinet has agreed to support a non-sand option for North Shore.
According to a report published by the council, Welsh Government’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management branch stated that the return of sand to North Shore “does not appear to provide any additional flood risk management benefits”.
Following public concerns of deposition of cobble on North Shore in 2014, the council’s cabinet established the Llandudno Coastal Forum to find a sustainable policy for beach management of North Shore.
