LLANDUDNO TOWN Council has stepped in to save public toilets in the Llandudno area, after the county council decision to continue with their closure.

Earlier this week, Conwy Council decided not to pause the closure of public toilets in the county, following a cabinet meeting on September 10.

Conwy’s cabinet met to discuss some councillors’ request to pause the closure of 19 public toilets.

In July, Conwy announced it would close 19 of its 40 public toilets on September 4, 2024, to cut costs.

But this move was delayed after councillors voted in favour of recommending cabinet provides further statistics in advance of further consultation with councillors.

Now, Llandudno Town Council have responded to the decision to provide emergency funding to keep the town’s public toilets open.

At a town council meeting yesterday (September 12), following recommendations by the Chair of the meeting, Cllr Louise Emery, the council supported the move proposed by Cllr Greg Robbins.

Cllr Thomas Montgomery, of Tudno ward, said of the decision: “I am delighted to announce that Llandudno Town Council has committed to stepping into the breach and will be providing emergency funding to keep our public toilets open in Llandudno.

“While I am disappointed with the way that the Cabinet have acted and handled this entire process, I am proud that where CCBC has rolled back its responsibilities Llandudno Town Council has stepped up to protect what matters to our town.

“While the battle isn’t over the work now starts to find sponsors and supporters for these toilets in the future.”

Commenting on the council’s decision to provide emergency funding, Aberconwy MS Janet Finch-Saunders said: “A huge congratulations to the Welsh Conservative group for spearheading the decision to use some Llandudno Town Council reserves to help keep some of the toilets open that were earmarked for closure.

“This is a common sense move and I am grateful to the Committee Chair, Cllr Louise Emery and all members of her group.

“The decision to close these toilets has angered many residents and visitors, especially at a time when council tax has increased locally, by nigh on 20 per cent over the past two years.

“Thank you to everyone who supported this important resolution. Llandudno Town Council has managed to step in where the Cabinet of Conwy County Borough Council has failed this community, again.”
