WORK could soon start to renovate Llanrwst Youth Centre’s roof.

Applicant Rachel Simmonds has applied to Conwy’s planning department, seeking permission to replace the asbestos cement roofing to the building’s main hall with a new composite insulated roofing system.

The plans for the building on Watling Street include guttering, ridge, verge, and eaves details, as well as the replacement of the existing roof ventilation cowls.

Other work proposed includes the removal and replacement of the existing internal heating and lighting to the main hall.

Llanrwst Town Council have written in support of the application.

But a planning report stated that ‘special regard’ must be taken when considering the site.

The report reads: “The building is one of several buildings surrounding the main building of Ysgol Bro Gwydir, which is a Grade II listed building.

“The old schoolhouse sited further to the southwest is also a Grade-two listed building, Special regard must be given to the desirability of preserving the setting of the nearby listed buildings.”

The report went on: “The application relates to a steel portal frame building with blockwork walls and a corrugated asbestos cement board roof. The building is functional in design and has no particular architectural detail or merit, and forms part of a cluster of buildings constructed within the grounds of the school.

“Due to the scale and nature of the proposal, the works are considered to have a neutral impact upon the appearance of the building. The materials and finishes are considered visually acceptable, and the proposal is not considered to result in any adverse impact upon the appearance of the building or the visual amenity of the surrounding area.”

Consequently, officers have recommended the planning committee grant permission for the work to go ahead, and the matter is set to be discussed at this week’s planning committee meeting at the council’s Bodlondeb HQ on Wednesday.
