CONWY residents and visitors have been advised to be careful when paying for parking to avoid becoming a victim of a fake QR code scam.

Parking operatives found fraudulent QR codes on parking meters at The Parade, Llandudno and Colwyn Bay Promenade last weekend.

These fake codes are designed to trick users into providing their payment details on bogus websites.

QR codes are not used by the official PayByPhone app which motorists can use to pay for parking in the county.

The QR codes lead to a website that pretends to be the PayByPhone site.

Scammers use these sites to steal payment information, often leading to more fraudulent payments from the bank accounts of unsuspecting motorists.

The scam also puts motorists at risk of parking fines, as they may not be aware that they haven’t purchased parking in the right way.

People can pay to park in Conwy County Borough Council-operated car parks through cash, card, telephone or via the PayByPhone app.

Civil enforcement officers working for the council will continue to monitor parking machines across the county and remove any unauthorised notices.

The council has reported the issue to North Wales Police and PayByPhone, who are working to remove the fraudulent site.

Anyone who has fallen victim to this kind of scam is advised to contact their bank to stop any further funds being taken.
