CONWY Council has responded to criticism of its provision of public transport as a two-week road closure affects businesses and residents alike.

The B5106 between Trefriw and Dolgarrog closed on Monday, 22 July for works to improve drainage as part of a flood alleviation scheme.

The closure will be in place until Monday, 5 August.

The road closure saw the 19 bus re-routed, and the implementation of a shuttle bus to help transport people to the new route.

However, this temporary service has already been cancelled, with one resident telling the Pioneer this has left them with "no alternative" and "stranded in school holidays".

Janet Finch-Saunders, MS for Aberconwy, labelled the lack of public transport options a "failure of Conwy County Borough Council.

Mrs Finch Saunders said the lack of public transport is"leaving residents unable to access GP appointments in Llanrwst, attend hospital appointments in Llandudno, and travel to access other services and businesses."

She added: “This is the first week of the school holiday, a time when a significant number of young people are likely to be using bus services for days out.

"For all in Dolgarrog and Tal-y-Bont, this is no longer a possibility.

“The train station in Maenan is not a genuine solution for the majority, due to various reasons, including accessibility."

The local authority said it had trialled a shuttle service, but that there was "insufficient demand to justify continuing the provision".

A spokesperson for Conwy County Borough Council said: "We apologise for the disruption during this essential work, which is designed to reduce the frequency of road closures due to flooding on B5106.

"We trialled a shuttle bus during the first phase of roadworks but there was insufficient demand to justify continuing the provision."
