A WOMAN who died in a house fire in Llandudno was “full of happiness” and “lived her life to the fullest”, an inquest heard.

Yvonne Williams died aged 65 at her home in King’s Road, Llandudno on February 9, 2024.

At the inquest into her death in Ruthin yesterday (July 4), Kate Robertson, assistant coroner for North Wales East and Central, gave a conclusion of accidental death.

The inquest heard that Ms Williams was born on October 20, 1958 in Llandudno, and grew up in a loving household with her parents and brother Matthew.

Ms Williams had learning difficulties, which had an effect on her life, and never had a job but would help her mother as a homemaker and enjoyed being around the house.

She remained living with her parents into adult life, and after 1981 refused to leave the house after nearly slipping – she was agoraphobic and preferred to stay in her bedroom.

Her brother Matthew Stewart said his sister was “loveable, chatty, kind and caring”, without a “bad bone in her body” and someone who “felt safe and content in her world”.

He said that Ms Williams “loved her life” and was “full of happiness and lived every moment to the fullest”, loving chips and curry sauce.

Ms Williams lived with her brother, his wife Jo and their four children in a Cartrefi Conwy home.

Having the same routine, they would light a candle in a ceramic wax warmer in her bedroom each day.

On February 9, Ms Williams “calmly” shouted down to Jo that her bedroom had caught fire, but that she could not go around the fire and out.

By this point, after failing to get Ms Wiliams out of the house, Ms Stewart had had to make sure her children were out, by which point the smoke was too thick to get into the house.

Mr Stewart had been at work at the time, and arrived at some point after 10.30am, with smoke “billowing” out the windows, when he was informed that Ms Williams had died.

A post-mortem examination was carried out by Dr Mohammed Aslam, a consultant pathologist at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, who gave a medical cause of death of burn injuries.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, in their investigation into the fire, found that the point of origin was on the floor between her bed and chest of drawers, with the fire burning at floor level for the majority of its development.

The windows were open, which meant there was sufficient air to support combustion and allow the fire to fully develop.

The radiated heat and smoke then spread to the rest of the property.

The inquest heard that Cartrefi Conwy, the housing association, had conducted tests on smoke detection regularly, with the latest in February 2023.

A ceramic wax warmer, which held the candle, was found at the point of origin, with investigating officer David Roberts of the opinion this was accidentally started by the candle.

Concluding, Mrs Robertson said it appeared the wax warmer had been accidentally knocked over by Ms Williams.

Giving a short form conclusion, Mrs Robertson said the blaze had been “entirely accidental and entirely unintended”, and gave a medical cause of death of burn injuries.

Addressing the family, she said: “I pass on to you, your children and wider family the most sincerest condolences on your loss.

“It’s clear that Yvonne had a satisfying life with you and your children and provided a great deal of support and love for you.

“I hope in time the good memories and better times you had with Yvonne will help you in periods of grief.”

Mr Stewart said the family was “devastated” that they would no longer enjoy her favourite television shows with her, and that she had “flourished” as a person with his children.

He added: “She adored the kids, and they loved her too.”
