A HOTEL in Llandudno which closed four years ago and has been vacant ever since could undergo a major refurbishment ahead of its reopening.

The Queens Lodge, at 5 Clonmel Street, closed in 2020 with the failure of the business not helped by the “poor” condition it was in.

But the hotel has been snapped up by hotel operating chain Everbright Hotels, which owns the Queen’s Hotel across the road.

The company has now submitted plans for a huge refurbishment to the external façade and internally, with the new owners “undertaking repairs, upgrading and redecoration” with a view to reopening it as a hotel.

The plans will see the façade upgraded, the replacement of windows and doors, the addition of a lift, internal refurbishment, and the repair of damaged and dated elements including the roof.

Once made up of 15 bedrooms, the new hotel would be made up of 13 en-suite bedrooms once ready.

The Grade II listed property was built in the 1860s, and dates back to the original expansion of the town in the mid-19th century.

It is made up of three storeys, as well as an attic and basement, and despite being of “architectural and aesthetic value”, its authenticity and heritage significance has been “diminished” since the removal of many original features.

Future opening plans would also allow for its guests to use communal facilities at the Queen’s Hotel.

A heritage statement, put forward by Hinchliffe Heritage, backed the plans and said: “The proposals will not involve the loss of any decorative historic fabric.

“Cumulatively, the proposed works will have a minor/moderate beneficial impact on the heritage significance of the building and the Llandudno conservation area.”

A decision on the plans will now be made by Conwy County Borough Council’s planning committee.
