PROPOSALS have been submitted to improve access to beaches in Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea.
The plans, sent to Conwy County Borough Council from Bay of Colwyn Town Council, request the installation of two 25-metre-lengths of removable beach matting at both Porth Eirias and Rhos-on-Sea beaches.
At each beach, the proposed matting would measure 1.5 metres in width.

It would be available in two colours - blue or sand - and will be fixed using large staples, to secure it into position on the soft sand.
During the autumn and winter, the matting would be removed and placed in storage off-site.
Extracts from the application form read: “Both of the sites are open access stretches of beach, above the high water mark, and are used by the general public for recreation and leisure.
“The proposed beach matting has been discussed with the harbour master and with the relevant Colwyn Place Plan Steering Group, and their support has been obtained.”
A further documented submitted, called a “green infrastructure statement”, states: “The need for improved access onto the beach has been identified through the community engagement conducted for the Colwyn Place Plan and through comments from residents and visitors on social media.
“The existing ramp from the promenade onto the beach to the west of Porth Eirias is covered in sand and is not suitable for any form of wheeled access to the beach.
“There is also no provision for any wheeled access onto the beach along the new Rhos-on-Sea section of promenade, other than a very small section of beach which can be accessed at the foot of the short slipway.
“The proposed beach mat is intended to improve access during the busier spring and summer months and is not intended for all-year use.
“We are assured by our research that there will not be any negative impact on either biodiversity or nature recovery as a result of the proposal.”
