A WOMAN from Colwyn Bay broke a Guinness World Record last weekend by hugging a tree on Rhos-on-Sea promenade for more than 24 hours.

Hebron Getachew, 29, hugged the tree for 24 hours and 10 minutes on June 22 and 23, beating the previous record of 16 hours and one minute.

Her challenge followed Great Big Green Week, held earlier this month, while a climate action march also took place in London last weekend.

Additionally, Hebron collected £72.32 in donations from the public, which she will deliver to Welsh Mountain Zoo next week, and distributed 17 tree seedlings for planting, given to her by residents.

Hebron said: “I am truly grateful for the support I received from my county council and the broader community.

“During the attempt, I interacted with over 100 locals and 50 tourists who passed by.

“They shared encouraging words, took tree seedlings to plant at home, and brought their children to speak with me.

"This experience was truly inspirational and heart-warming.”

Hebron said her biggest challenge was remaining resolute during “skin-piercing” winds, particularly on June 22.

But she was assisted in this by the blankets and aluminium foil she received, which she wrapped around her waist to protect herself from the gusts.

She added: “I managed to break the record and spread a message of hope and positive social impact to young children and future generations.

“Connecting with kids, inspiring them, and easing their current worries about climate change is my priority.

“I feel that I managed to achieve this through this fun yet inspiring record attempt.”
