A MAN from Conwy who drug-drove in Colwyn Bay was told he is on his “last chance” as he was handed a community order.

Korrie Rothwell, 23, of Parc Sychnant, was sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court today (June 6), having previously admitted a charge of drug-driving.

Prosecuting, Richard Edwards told the court that, shortly after 4pm on December 19, 2023, officers saw a Mercedes vehicle – being driven by Rothwell - pull out of a junction, causing another motorist to brake harshly.

Rothwell was then followed by the officers, who later stopped him and carried out a roadside drug swipe, which gave a positive reading for ketamine.

This offence took place while a suspended sentence, issued to Rothwell in November 2022 for perverting the course of justice, was still in effect.

He also had been previously convicted for drink-driving.

Defending Rothwell, Elen Owen said there is a “substantial amount of mitigation” in his case.

She said he has a “level of, perhaps, some immaturity” about the defendant, adding that he has significant mental health issues.

But Ms Owen added that he is in full-time employment, and has a partner, with whom he has a 11-month-old child.

Sentencing, Judge Nicola Saffman banned Rothwell from driving for three years.

As part of his two-year community order, Rothwell will complete a six-month drug rehabilitation programme, a 30-day programme requirement, and 15 days’ rehabilitation activity.

Judge Saffman told Rothwell: “You’ve got a child. You need to grow up.

“I know that you’ve got a lot of issues in your life, but so do lots of other people, and they don’t go out and put other people’s lives at risk by taking drugs and driving in cars.

“People have difficult times. Not everybody who has difficult times turns to unlawful drugs. You can’t do that. You’ve got to get a grip.

“I know you’ve got mental health problems. This order will help you address those. Use it.

“Last chance for you, Mr Rothwell.”

Rothwell will also pay a £500 fine and a £187 statutory surcharge.
