The redevelopment of a prominent site in Deganwy is set to replace the current commercial buildings with 19 high-quality residential apartments.

The existing premises on Station Road and York Road, occupied by Robertson Geologging, no longer suits the company's needs,

Matthew Jones Architects have been tasked with the design of the new build.

The main building, a red brick structure built in the 1920s, was a car showroom, later becoming a Kwiksave supermarket in the 1980s.

Matt Jones, architect and director of MJA, explained the development saying: "A new modern sustainable development with appropriate density, massing, design, and detailing was strongly felt to be the best way forward."

He adds: "We were naturally pleased and excited as a local architects to be involved in the design proposals for the redevelopment of this prominent site in Deganwy for Robertsons Geologging.

"The overriding design principle behind the proposals is that any development must be in keeping and respect the area in which it is located and the importance of the heritage assets of the Deganwy Castle on the Vardre and the listed Deganwy Castle Hotel."

Among the considerations made were the retention and re-use of the existing buildings.

This however, was deemed commercially unviable.

The new designs feature a number of blocks taking advantage of the sloping topography, along with panoramic views while maintaining the amenity and privacy of the adjacent properties.

Mr Jones added: "The scale of the buildings match that of the adjacent properties on both Station and York Road using a neutral palate of materials of render, brick and slate to reflect the local vernacular but with a modern twist.

"The proposals have sought to avoid adverse impact through the use of suitable materials, colours, massing and scale within the design proposal to reflect the immediate and wider townscape."
