NEW signage has been erected on a beach in Colwyn Bay highlighting the area on it which dogs are banned from entering.

At a cabinet meeting in October, county councillors in Conwy voted for a new public consultation to take place on whether dogs will be allowed to go on Colwyn Bay Beach.

The cabinet was voting on a new Dog Control Public Space Protection Order, which governs where dogs can be walked across the county.

This order was first put in place in 2017, then updated in 2020, but expired last October.

Dog beach ban goes back to public consultation after council sign blunder

Although most of the order was voted through, the part referring specifically to Colwyn Bay Beach was sent back out for a new public consultation.

Last week, signs were put up informing residents where their dogs cannot walk along the beach, though one person contacted the Pioneer complaining of a lack of consultation on the matter.

The sign reads: “Dogs are not allowed to enter the area of Colwyn Bay Beach between Colwyn Bay Pier and Porth Eirias, as shown in red on the map.”

But a resident told the Pioneer: “My main thoughts are that we were aware of the longstanding winter/summer situation and that there was an attempt at a consultation to make it a total ban, but no indication of any outcome.

“The seasonal signage disappeared some time ago, and then all of a sudden on May 31, the new signs had appeared.

“It will be interesting if they now plan to ban barbecues, picnics, or drink bottles from the beach, as debris of this sort can have a bigger impact than a few dogs.”

The previous order in place forbade dogs from being walked on the section of beach between the pier and Porth Eirias all year round.

But the council’s website and signage said the beach was seasonal for dogs, allowing dogs to be walked between September 30 and May 1, causing confusion among dog owners.

A full list of dog control orders can be found on Conwy County Borough Council’s website.

In response to the resident’s comments, a council spokesperson said: “Since Porth Eirias became a dry beach in 2018, dogs have been excluded from the area between Colwyn Bay Pier and Porth Eirias.

“Dogs are also excluded from the small sandy area of beach at Rhos Point.

“When the Dog Control PSPOs (public space protection orders) were discussed at cabinet on October 19, 2023, there was a proposal to extend the permanent dog exclusion area to the whole of Colwyn Bay Beach.

“Councillors agreed that there should be further discussions with local members and further public consultation on the options for potential alternatives to a permanent dog exclusion on the section between Porth Eirias and Rhos-on-Sea.

“A date for this further consultation is to be confirmed.”
