Teenager to walk Conwy’s three peaks in memory of late family friend

Freddie Jones, 14, will be heading to the summits of Conwy Mountain, the Great Orme and the Little Orme with his mum, Lisa, to raise money for MIND, an organisation which helps those with mental health issues.

The walk is in memory of Christian Smith, who was supported by MIND for some time prior to his death at the end of 2023, and whose brother, Adam, is Freddie’s godfather.

So far, Freddie has raised a total of £320 for the charity, already surpassing his initial target.

Freddie, who is a pupil at Ysgol Glan Clwyd in St Asaph, is determined to complete the challenge despite struggling with knee and hip problems.

Lisa said: “Christian used to send us weekly text messages, just telling us to ‘enjoy the weekend’, and things like that.

“The walk is about 15 miles long, and he's doing this despite having physiotherapy for knee and hip problems himself early this year.

“He's previously raised £1,000+ for Cancer Research by giving up sweets for a month, completing a triathlon, and organising ‘parents vs kids’ football matches.”

Lisa added: “He set a target of £200 at first, but is now at £320, so anything more he can raise would just be great.

“I quite like walking, as well, but I’m not sure about three peaks and 15 miles!

“But he’ll do it, without a shadow of a doubt. He’s very committed; I think it’ll take about six or seven hours.”
