THE FISHING platform on the new-look Old Colwyn Promenade has reopened to the public.

The platform’s construction was part of the £18million promenade and sea defence project in Old Colwyn, and is located at Splash Point by the Old Colwyn Arches.

The three-year project began in May 2021, and despite an initial 18-month time frame, was extended until 2024.

It included building a 720m long rock barricade in front of the existing seawall using 160,000 tonnes of rock, raising the promenade and road by 1.5 metres, and adding a fishing platform and new beach access steps.

All that remains to be done is the addition of hand railing to the beach access steps, while extra funding has been secured for an extension of the rock barricade in front of the sea wall.

A Conwy County Borough Council spokesperson said: “The new fishing platform at Old Colwyn is now open for use - no booking or fee.

“With the fishing platform now open, we're waiting for a final delivery of the hand railing for the beach access steps, so these can open to the public.

“We've also received extra funding from Welsh Government's Resilient Roads Fund to extend the rock barricade in front of the sea wall opposite Rotary Way.

“This will help to protect this section of promenade while we look for funding to complete the final section of planned work between Porth Eirias and Rotary Way.”
