‘Breast friends’ raise more than £30,000 for Glan Clwyd's cancer unit

The group, which calls themselves “breast friends”, is comprised of women who have all received some form of treatment through the hospital’s cancer unit.

Their latest efforts included a “boobie ball” at The Beaches Hotel, Prestatyn on April 20, and a raffle, which took their fundraising total for the last 12 months past the £30,000 mark.

They previously also shot a nude calendar to raise money for the cancer unit.

More than £8,000 raised by ‘breast friends’ for Glan Clwyd Hospital’s cancer unit

Sally Smart helped bring the group of “breast friends” together after she reached out on social media to people who, like her, had received a breast cancer diagnosis.

She said: “Fundraising is stopping now, but we still plan to all get together on a regular basis for social events.

“The target was £10,000, which everyone though was a little extreme – we’d have been happy with £5,000, so to get this stage is just overwhelming.

“I think we’ve all gained so much from it - not only friendship, fun and laughs, but confidence, too.”

Sally was diagnosed with breast cancer at the start of 2022, before completing her course of chemotherapy later that year.

She wanted to support the unit after the “phenomenal” treatment she has received there since she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“When you’re sat there, having your chemotherapy, it’s really quite frightening, but the staff at Glan Clwyd make it so manageable,” Sally said.

“They make you laugh, and make you feel brilliant about yourself, and strong enough to cope with it all. They answer all your questions, and just look after you so much.

“This, really, was just a way of giving back to the unit.”
