Colwyn Bay Community Hwb opens its doors - read what's on

Colwyn Bay Community Hwb, on Rhiw Road, held an open day earlier this month but is already a hive of activity.  

Activities for all members of the community are being held. These include Boogie Bounce, Clubbercise, board game nights, coffee mornings, a Pokémon League, a youth Dungeons and Dragons group, a gaming club, as well as table top sales - just to name a few. 

There is also a tearooms and foodbank.

Tom Ward, who owns Wardy's Gaming on Abergele Road in Colwyn Bay, has opened the new venture alongside fellow directors Joe Blakesley and Ben Watts.

Tom said: "The open day was a great day everyone that came had a great time.

"The VR which was organised by NEXTGEN YOUTH was very popular as was the music workshop with Underground Artist Movement (UAM). Aspire Fitness had some of the silent disco headphones out for the kids and some of their fitness equipment for people to see and the kids enjoyed playing with the hula hoops.

"We also now have at the 'Hwb Tots And Toddlers Soft Play' on Mondays. Visitors also enjoyed the model railway at the Hwb."

The building is available for community groups to hire out and residents can rent the hall for events such as birthday parties. 

It is also hoped that the 'Hwb' can support young people and get them off the streets.

The space has a clear message that once you walk through the door, 'you leave your problems outside'.

Prior to opening, Tom said: "We signed the lease on February 29, we are pleased to be open.

"We hope it will become a space for teenagers to come and drop in, get them off the streets. 

"It is open to all the community. 

"In the summer, we are hoping we can organise a coach trip for families to somewhere like Blackpool or the Chester Zoo," Tom added.

"If we can get the funding, we can send families on a trip that normally they wouldn't be able to afford. Something extra to do in the summer holidays."

Prior to opening, Tom was working flat out getting things ready but said it was worth all the effort. 

"Seeing all the smiles on kids faces, it is all worth it," he said. 

"This is giving something back to the community."
