PLANS for an 85-foot-tall telecommunications mast have been put on hold after a rival communications company objected.

Icon Tower Infrastructure Ltd applied to Conwy County Council’s planning department, seeking permission to erect a 26-metre-high monopole, supporting up to 12 antennas and up to four dishes at land at Llandudno Football Club.

The plans would allow the company to offer 5G coverage and were discussed at a planning committee meeting on Wednesday at Bodlondeb.

Councillors heard how the football ground is close to a mixture of commercial and residential properties, a coach park, skate park, and Ysgol John Bright, but the site is also located within the Cadw designated historic landscape.

But rival company Cornerstone, which operates an older mast nearby, submitted a last-minute objection.

The rival company argued under legislation older masts should be first considered for an upgrade for 5G coverage.

Representing Icon, agent Vicky Weston said planning legislation shouldn’t prevent competition amongst rival companies.

A planning report stated that the 26.2m mast would not be visually detrimental to the area.

Planning officers had advised the committee it should be minded to grant permission for the mast on Maesdu Park on Builder Street West but changed their recommendation at the last minute.

Planning officers instead recommended that the matter should be deferred to allow further discussion with the companies and officers, and Cllr Trystan Lewis proposed the committee follow the advice.

Cllr Stephen Price seconded the recommendation, and the matter was deferred for debate at a future meeting.
