A CONWY church parish has thanked God nobody was hurt after a huge tree was split in half by Storm Isha earlier last week.

Winds between 70-90 mph struck the coast where extensive damage caused the tree to vertically split at St Benedict’s Church in Gyffin, Conwy, falling onto a path.

Luckily nobody was hurt in the incident.

On their public Facebook page, the church parish of Caru Conwy thanked the Lord nobody was hurt after the loss of what is thought to be a yew tree.

“Storm Isha let us know she had arrived overnight on Sunday,” they wrote.

“A large section of the beautiful tree in the St Benedict’s churchyard was blown down and broke away from the main tree trunk, falling across the main path and over many gravestones.

“We thank God nobody was hurt, and our church remains intact. Work will soon begin to have it removed safely by professionals. Visitors and congregation should take care when visiting or attending services not to slip if choosing to walk around the fallen branch.”

Woodland Trust volunteer, mum of two, Eva Palencarova, 43, was upset about the damage to the tree.

“It’s devastating,” said Eva from Conwy.

“My three-year-old is very fond of St Benedict’s Church, so we often visit the grounds on our walks. I always spend a good amount of time just staring at this tree in awe. What a sad loss for the area and the church.”

A spokeswoman for Conwy County Council said it was private land so they wouldn’t be involved in the tree’s removal.
