A NEW study has crowned Betws-y-Coed as the best place to enjoy a “staycation” in the UK.

Research conducted by experts at GO Outdoors looked at the number of hiking, biking, nature and wildlife, as well as the average cost of transport and how popular the destination is.

This was all put together into an overall “holiday hotspot” score, with Betws-y-Coed topping the list with 8.4 out of 10.

As well as being the destination with the most nature and wildlife tours, it was also found to be the best location for a hiking holiday.

It received the following scores for each individual category:

  • Google searches – 390
  • Things to do – 691
  • Nature and wildlife tours – 691
  • Bike tours – 35.46
  • Hiking trails – 585.1
  • Cost of transport - £2.50
