ABOUT 500 people have signed an online petition calling on Conwy County Borough Council to scrap plans to introduce “pay and display” at the Glasdir car park, beside the A470 in Llanrwst.

On December 7, the council voted to fund the additional £12,000 required to resurface the Watling Street car park through pay and display at both Watling Street and Glasdir.

The former already has pay and display. The other £249,000 is being awarded as a grant by the UK Government.

Cllr Mostyn Jones, the petition founder, said: “With our county councillors not raising concerns on our behalf, and one speaking in favour of the business case which is a bad deal for Llanrwst, it is incumbent on us, the public, to stand up for the community.

“The strength of feeling in rural Conwy is clear because hundreds are making an effort to sign the petition.

“The car park is next to the largest library in the county which serves rural Conwy, is used by numerous people who work in the town, and is relied on by many residents who have no alternative place to park.

“Many of us rely on the car park to attend choir practices and church services, and it is our major car park beside the A470, so has a key role to play in helping see more people stop in rather than just drive through the town.

“Rather than try to cover the cost by introducing harmful charges at Glasdir, Conwy County Borough Council should look to find the £12,000 elsewhere.

“There is time to sort out this crisis for our community.”

Conwy County Borough Council was approached for comment.
