PARLIAMENT has voted through the second reading of the government's controversial Safety of Rwanda Bill.

313 MPs voted for the legislation and 269 against, giving the government a majority of 44.

The bill seeks to enable the removal of asylum seekers from the United Kingdom to Rwanda and states that its purpose is to "deter dangerous and illegal journeys to the United Kingdom".

The bill has proven divisive, with MPs largely split along party lines.

37 Conservatives MPs did not record a vote, including two in North Wales.

This does not automatically equate to an abstention, as some MPs will have permission to be away, but in many cases it will be.

The Rwanda plan now faces a third reading in the House of Commons in January.
