‘Llandudno is still the Queen of Welsh Resorts’

Councillors and volunteers travelled down to London this week for the Britain in Bloom Awards ceremony where they were awarded the prestigious gold award.

The award follows the Wales in Bloom judges last year also awarding Llandudno a gold award before putting the town forward for the best coastal town in the UK, representing Wales.

Llandudno were one of a handful of towns to be awarded gold.

Despite Lytham in north west England and East Haven in Scotland being crowned overall joint winners, Cllr Louise Emery, who travelled to the ceremony, believes Llandudno has both hands on the crown of best Welsh resort.

Cllr Emery commented: “I’m so proud of all the community groups that came with us on this journey because it is about showcasing the volunteers around the town who keep it well maintained and also deliver projects to create more green spaces. That’s what the awards are about.

“For the town, it does mean a lot. I know we have the gold signs on the road. But one of the many comments visitors make is how the town is well looked after, how it is free of litter, and how most of the time the parks are beautiful and the beaches are clean.

“That has a lot to do with the volunteer groups we have in the town, who work alongside the county council and the town council, so it really does help our tourism offer, and it is lovely for residents to see how well maintained their town is.”

She added: “I can’t think of any town that could possibly match us, so yes, Llandudno is still the Queen of Welsh Resorts, so it’s important we look after the town so it remains the Queen of Welsh Resorts for years to come.”

The Britain in Bloom Awards judges assess towns by their category in terms of sustainability, looking great, community engagement, and use of open spaces.

Llandudno mayor Greg Robbins congratulated everyone who had worked towards the award – as well as a Llandudno youngster who had also received a special young persons’ award.

“I wish to thank all involved in our very successful results in Britain in Bloom,” he said.

“I wish to especially acknowledge the hard work of the Bloom and Streetscene Environment Committee, the many friends’ groups and individual volunteers, and Conwy’s open spaces team.

“I am also very proud to say that Llandudno also won an award for the way the various groups encourage younger people and get them involved. Well done to everyone involved with this important work in our community.”

He added: “This was particularly reflected by Ben Jones from Llandudno, winning one of only two Young Champions Awards. Many congratulations to this brilliant young man from our town for his achievements, and please carry on the great work.”
