FROM September 1, Conwy Telecare, which supports older or disabled people through technology in their home, is set to almost double in price.
The majority of customers were notified by letter in August, less than a month before the outlined price hike.
The annual bill for the Telecare Rental and Monitoring will increase by 70 per cent, from £182.00 to £310.25.
Janet Finch-Saunders, Aberconwy MS, said: “I am absolutely shocked to hear that Conwy County Borough Council (CCBC) are increasing the annual bill for Telecare by 70 per cent.
“This is well above the current inflation rate. I see no justification whatsoever for the current cabinet for such a scandalous increase for what can be a lifesaving device.
“This is yet another disgraceful example in Conwy where council taxpayers are being fleeced by an inefficient and failing local authority.
“To target our older residents and our most vulnerable is, frankly, a disgrace.
“I shall be writing to the Leader of CCBC today to request a U-turn on this shocking decision”.
In response, Cllr Penny Andow, CCBC cabinet member for integrated adult and community services, said: “We need to make sure the Conwy Telecare Service is sustainable and continues to offer an affordable and accessible Telecare Service for the residents of Conwy County.
“There hasn’t been an increase in Telecare charges for customers in Conwy since 2010.
“The service has been subsidised by CCBC but this was no longer possible due to ongoing pressures on the budget.
“Elected members considered proposals to increase the weekly charge for the Conwy Telecare Service, and the impact of any increase, as part of the 23-24 budget setting process.
“We are aware of the impact of such an increase on vulnerable people, and that is why the increase is the minimum required to ensure the service covers its costs.
“We needed to act now to make sure the service continues over future years.”
