A MUCH-LOVED charity has won a gold award in this year’s Llandudno In Bloom competition.
St David’s Hospice Llandudno site, based on Abbey Road, claimed gold in the ‘Communal Garden’ category.
Hospice volunteers, who have christened themselves ‘The Lawn Rangers’ have been donating their time since September last year to give the hospice gardens a well-deserved facelift.
Founding ‘Lawn Ranger’ member and local gardener Yvonne Cheadle suggested putting the garden forward for the competition, and even donated 1,400 bedding plants.
“I was overwhelmed to win gold in our category. I was lost for words, to have achieved such a high standard in 10 months is amazing.” said Ms Cheadle.

The award follows a series of developments that have taken place in the hospice gardens over the last couple of years.
The most recent addition has been a gazebo, donated by online gardening company J Parkers, which will be used for patient weddings and arts therapy sessions.
The purpose of the garden project is to help with the wellbeing of the patients.
Ms Cheadle added: “The garden has a huge impact on the quality of a patient's life.
“Patients can go outside to observe nature, colours, plants and smells, or they can simply enjoy the outdoor space for activities, weddings etc.
“Patients who are confined to their bed can see flowers and observe nature, we have placed bird feeders, bird boxes and insect boxes around the garden.
Lou Barber, volunteer coordinator at St David’s Hospice, said: “I am so proud of what the Lawn Rangers have achieved.
“They have all worked so hard to create the beautiful garden spaces that our patients and visitors enjoy so much.
“Being awarded gold in the mutual garden category is so heart-warming and we are all very grateful to our volunteers.”
Department store Clares claimed silver in the Llandudno in Bloom mutual garden award.
The Hospice relies on the support donated by over 400 volunteers - last year they donated 65,000 hours of their time to the charity.
