PLANS have been put forward to carry out improvements and extension work at an "overcrowded" primary school and to create better car parking.

Bodlondeb Council Offices, who are acting on behalf of the applicant, have submitted proposals to Conwy County Borough Council to improve the condition of the existing building at Ysgol Deganwy on Park Drive.

The school, built in 1939, is described as "overcrowded" and mould, damp and lack of heating in some classrooms has triggered the need for upgrades.

The school is hoping to gain approval to carry out a new hall and kitchen extension; a new classroom extension; a new infill extension; general internal alterations and refurbishment work; new external wall insulation with white rendered finish and feature wood-effect classing throughout and general decoration; new covered play / learning areas under new canopies; thermal upgrade of existing roofs; new solar PV panels; refurbishment of the main entrance and canopy; upgrade to all existing glazing units, including windows and doors, to new composite double-glazed units with dark grey frames, a new enclosed netball court to the allotment area, improved car parking and better deliveries / services access by creating a new one-way system and a temporary twin-classroom for use during the construction phase.

There will also be demolition work to the "life-expired" modular Northwest building and mobile classroom.

A Design and Access Statement says: "The existing building at Ysgol Deganwy needs general refurbishment, upgrade and repairs and improvements to its thermal performance as well as an expansion to accommodate the currently overcrowded public body and improve the existing facilities. The recent presence of mould, damp, and the lack of heating in some classrooms presents and health risk and the current hall is not sufficiently sized to fit all the pupils.

"The latest guidance and planning policies have been considered in the design of a new extension to improve the condition of the existing building at Ysgol Deganwy, make better the use of space internally and externally and achieve the highest modern standards of thermal performances and energy efficiency by meeting sustainability targets with a zero carbon in-use strategy."

The school wants to demolish its Northwest modular building and replace it with a new multifunctional hall with associated storage, kitchen and accessible WC as well as a new communal kitchen. This will enable the hall to be used as a dining hall, physical education lessons, performances and for after school activities and community use.

There will be a new enclosed netball court. Shrubbery from this location will be replanted elsewhere.

The school caters for 289 children between the ages of three and 11 years old.

Further additions to the build were made in 1961, 1967 and 2003. This has created a school that has a mixture of large and small classroom spaces.

Deganwy Playgroup is located next to the school.
