A SILENT protest was held in Llandudno on Saturday (June 24) to show solidarity with those affected by the Kakhovka dam disaster in Ukraine.

The dam, blown up by the Russians in the early hours of June 6, flooded villages and towns, including Kherson, which is situated about 53 miles down the River Dnipro.

It is under threat and is being compared by experts to Chernobyl and the possibility of repeating that disaster at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station.

To raise awareness about the devastation and to show support to people of Kherson region, residents came with posters and flags on Llandudno promenade on a busy Saturday afternoon.

Helen Dunning, a resident of Ukraine originally from Llandudno, said: “The devastation is beyond comprehension.

“Almost two weeks have passed, but the people will be affected for years: loss of the loved ones, those who could not escape; death of animals; loss of belongings, homes; destruction of farmland; lack of drinking water, contamination of rivers, seas.

“This will have economic, ecological, humanitarian and sanitary consequences for years to come.

“The procession went on to the beach and stood silently, with some standing in the water showing solidarity with people who were flooded.

“Locals and tourists watched with interest, some coming closer to read the posters and talk to Ukrainians. Many showed their support.

“Some even posed for a photograph holding the Ukrainian flag.”

Meanwhile, a table top sale and brunch will be held in Llandudno at the Trinity Centre on July 8 (11am – 2pm).

To set up a stall, it will cost you £7 per table (free entry for buyers), with the proceeds going to supporting those in Ukraine.
