MORE than 5,000 people have now signed a petition calling for Welsh Government to fund the removal of quarry rocks and the restoration of sand and groynes to Llandudno’s North Shore beach.

A total of 10,000 are needed for the petition to be considered for a debate in the Senedd.

Janet Finch-Saunders, Aberconwy MS, is working with Cllr Ian Turner and other concerned residents to help see sand restored to the beach.

You can sign the petition here: petitions.senedd.wales/petitions/245414.

Mrs Finch-Saunders said: “Having researched old newspaper accounts of our beloved beach, I have come across an article from 1900 which recalls how along the length of the promenade visitors were enjoying the beautiful effects of the sandcastle building competition held.

“Apparently, there were hundreds of children on the beach constructing forts and bridges, houses and light-houses, and even a miniature Conwy Castle, all out of sand.

“Today, most of the beach is made up of dangerous boulders. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have more sand, and see major sandcastle competitions like that I have described, return?

“We are halfway to securing the 10,000 signatures required so that replacing the quarry stones with sand at one of the UK’s leading destinations can be debated by the Welsh Parliament.

“Please support our beach by signing online.”

A public meeting regarding the beach is being held by the Aberconwy MS at Llandudno Town Hall on July 7 at 6pm.
