RESIDENTS in Llandudno will be safer from stray balls after Conwy Council’s planning committee rubber-stamped a decision to allow specialist netting to be erected at a golf course.
Last month, Conwy Council agreed to allow North Wales Golf Club on Bryniau Road to erect the specialist golf-course netting along a 30m boundary.
The netting is to protect residential properties on Frank Villas, Elizabeth Villas, Clare Villas, Ernestine Villas, and Bryniau Court.
Planning officers had advised councillors that the plans were inappropriate in a designated special landscape area, arguing granting the application was contrary to green belt and green wedge policies.

But councillors granted the application against the professional advice, meaning committee members had to reaffirm their decision at a Bodlondeb meeting this week.
Cllr Ifor Lloyd proposed councillors backed the plans on health and safety grounds.

Llandudno councillor Mandy Hawkins seconded the proposal before the reaffirmation was voted through.
“We need to be taking into account what all local residents feel about this as well as the local town council in Llandudno and our own highways, environmental health, and ecology department within the council,” she said.
“All have no objections to this fence. The golf club themselves are trying to do all they can to mitigate any accidents from stray balls, so I don’t see any reason why we don’t go ahead.”
The area concerned is a triangular ‘parcel of land’ to the south-west of the clubhouse, north-west of homes on Fairways.
Residents want the 10m-high netting to protect their homes and a nearby park from stray golf balls and fear a new tee location under construction could add to the problems.
According to a planning report, the golf club doesn’t have planning permission for some netting already in place – and some repairs to existing netting are also needed.
The new fence will be constructed from three galvanised steel support posts with golf netting erected in between, fixed to horizontal wires.
