AN MS has called upon a council to "try harder" to re-open the county's paddling pools and say a "simple internet search" offers a solution.

Paddling pools in Craig y Don, Llanfairfechan, Penmaenmawr and Rhos on Sea will not be opening as normal in May

Following a full safety audit of all sites, some areas were deemed as "a high slip risk".

As a result, the council said they will be not opening the sites as they work to find an "alternative solution."

A spokesperson for the local authority said: "We planned to carry out some work to apply a specialist anti-slip coating to the surfaces, but unfortunately the only UK provider and installer is now unable to carry out the work due to sudden ill health.

"We are urgently trying to find an alternative solution or training for another contractor to carry out this essential health and safety work."

Mr Millar has slammed the statement and said a "simple internet search seems to suggest that there are many firms offering a solution to these sorts of problems."

He said: “All of these paddling pools are popular venues offering free family activities throughout the warmer months. They are well-used used by locals and visitors alike, so for them not to be open this summer would be disastrous

“I simply do not accept that there is no solution available in the council and urge the local authority to get its act together and try harder to rectify the problem.

“I did a quick internet search and it appears that there are a number of firms offering a solution to this issue.

“If this is not sorted quickly young children and their families will really miss out and people will simply choose to go elsewhere.

Cllr Jo Nuttall, of Rhos-on-Sea ward, said: "I cannot believe that the council are prepared to not reopen Rhos on Sea paddling pool this year, especially at a time when families are crying out for free, fun activities.

"The paddling pools bring hundreds of people to the area over the summer so this decision will also have an impact on local businesses too.

"Come on Conwy, you can do better than this. The pool is one of the major attractions in the town and brings people into Rhos from far and wide."
