A HUSBAND-and-wife-run artisan bakery in Llandudno is marking a successful first year of business today (April 12).

Benjamin and Dominika Lee opened Benjamin Lee Artisan Bakery, at 21 Mostyn Avenue, Craig-y-Don, for the first time on April 12, 2022.

Dominika, a former account manager, runs the shop and café, while Benjamin, with more than 30 years’ experience to draw on, is the baker and chocolatier.

All of the products at the bakery, which is open from Tuesday through to Saturday, are made in-house by a team of professionals.

The couple, who married in 2021, particularly focus on sourdough-based produce, and embracing the shop’s Welsh roots.

Dominika said: “It’s been a super busy year. We started when it was quite a difficult time because of COVID, but we haven’t really stopped.

“We see customers coming back, whose names and stories we know, so it’s been really good to see the support we get. It’s been constantly positive feedback, which is very rewarding.”

Benjamin and Dominika also live in Craig-y-Don, which Dominika hailed as a “great little community” to run a business in.

The highlight of the last year, she said, has simply been “the fact that we’re in such a strong position”.

She added: “We’ve kept growing stronger and stronger, and have been asked by many people if we can supply them.

“We’ve started providing Providero (Llandudno coffee house) with our sourdough and pastries, so it’s been very positive.

“We’ve been very lucky. We really appreciate where we are.”

The café also has an outdoor seating area, but the couple had to make room for more tables inside the premises after the success of introducing hot food to its menu in late 2022.

Having refurbished the entire building prior to opening a year ago, including the upstairs area, the couple have been keen to create a unique bakery with a wide range of high-quality products.

Dominika said: “Now, in our lunch hours, we’re really packed. Lunch has been so successful. You can have a beautiful cooked breakfast here, too, so it’s an all-day place, really.

“It was great to see all of our customers talking today about when we first opened.

“We will probably have a social event to celebrate, and might raise a toast later, but today was another busy, successful day, so that was our celebration.”
