A GROUP of Llandudno Junction residents are well on their way to raising £10,000 so that 100 young people can undergo “heart screening” in the summer.
The group are raising the money under the name of “Jayne’s Memorial Fund”, with funds going to the charity “Cardiac Risk in the Young”.
Its main organiser is Anne Evans, whose daughter, Jayne, had a heart defect, and died aged 12 while playing netball in 1988.

“Heart screening”, or cardiac screening, is offered by Cardiac Risk in the Young to those aged between 14 and 35, and can help to diagnose most abnormalities of the heart.
Nikki Owen, another of the group’s main fundraisers, was a school friend of Jayne’s.

She said: “We started raising money in about last November; we’re well over halfway, and are nearly up to £8,000 now.
“We’ve had support from the council as well, who have just approved us a grant, so we’ve done really well. Because of how well we’ve done, we’re considering making this a yearly event.
“I’ve always kept in touch with Jayne’s family, and you see people like footballers pass away (from heart problems).
“I’ve got three kids of my own, and even younger people, like Jayne herself, pass away while playing sport.”
Fundraisers so far have included taking on the world’s fastest zip line at Zip World over Penrhyn Quarry, a bingo, a jumble sale, raffles and more.
Another jumble sale will be held on Sunday (March 26) at Memorial Hall in Llandudno Junction between 2-4pm (50p entry).
